NAT Label Victory

Naturally Advanced Technologies Inc. announced Monday that the Federal Trade Commission will allow the company to label products made with its fiber as “flax” rather than “linen.”

The distinction is important for the company, which keeps its executive offices in Portland, as it pursues a retail strategy with partners including HanesBrands, Target and Levi Strauss & Co., some of the brands that are evaluating or using Naturally Advanced’s flax-based Crailar fiber.  To read the full story click here.

Pick up & Delivery

As we mentioned in our post about baling, the first deliveries to our new facility in Pamplico were literally hours later.  Once the flax has been baled we pick them up and take delivery.  The round bales weigh in at a very respectable 1000lbs each.  Notice the attention the teams are putting into tying down, checking in, and building the bale pyramids. We check in all of the bales with UPC labels, so we can trace where all of our feedstock is coming from, and of course that no bale goes missing.

The first bales of flax arrive at the Pamplico facility.

Checking in the bales.

A half ton each.

Keep ’em coming!

Tons of straw on every delivery

Neat, tidy and fast delivery

Baling in South Carolina

While many of you out there may see this type of activity on your local fields fairly regularly, trust us, it’s not flax that is being baled up.  The CRAiLAR team is happy to see our flax which was harvested a few short weeks ago, get baled up, sorted and prepared to be picked up for delivery to our Pamplico facility.  While the baling is taken care of with some very large machinery and talented operators, the logistics of getting the bales lined up, placed on the flatbeds, tied down and delivered is no small feat.  Thanks to everyone for all your continued effort!

Lining up and arranging the bales

Neat and orderly

Another snap of a field ready to be moved out

No less impressive, square bales in the barn, ready to go

All of this hard work just continues.  Updates on the delivery coming, stay tuned!

Harvest Time

As mentioned Wednesday this week, we would like to keep you updated on how things are going with the flax harvest this spring.  At the risk of sounding a bit smug, we can confidently say that our efforts are bearing fruit, seed and straw in our case.

We have been working on growth trials, trying various strains of flax from around the world, and testing the fields for a few seasons, and we are getting very close to harvest in South Carolina.  Winter growing is a bit of a challenge but flax is proving itself to be a very robust and hardy plant.

Below is a series of snaps that we’ve taken over the past week or so.  We’ve also been getting our growers together and up to date on the latest harvesting methods, equipment and building some good, old-fashioned CRAiLAR team spirit along the way.

Company to set up in Florence County

Naturally Advanced Technologies Inc. plans to open a facility in Florence County. An initial $8 million investment will create 25 jobs as part of the company’s move to the county.

The company produces and markets CRAiLAR®, a natural fiber made from flax and other bast fibers.

“We thank the state of South Carolina, Florence County and all those who helped to establish the company’s presence in South Carolina,” said Ken Barker, CEO of NAT in a press release. “We are proud to see our investments and hard work beginning to pay off in the form of the production of CRAiLAR for commercial use. We’re particularly excited that Hanesbrands, our first production partner for Crailar, is being recognized this month for its sustainability efforts by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and that it cited the use of our flax fiber, produced out of our test facility in Kingstree, in its EcoSmart socks available at retail in April. We look forward to further establishing our commercial, agricultural and civic partnerships in the state.”

NAT will locate its operations in the 143,500-square-foot Delta Mills Cypress plant on Old River Road in Pamplico.  To read the full story click here.
